There are a few ways that you can keep your storage unit organized so that you can find what you need and eliminate items that are no longer important to you. Use labeled plastic containers, boxes and pallets to assist with keeping your belongings in order. A small amount of planning, beforehand, will make the process very simple to get used to.
Label Each Container And Create A List That Matches
As you are placing items in the storage unit, label each plastic container or box with a letter. You can use a permanent marker or spray paint to complete this step. Write a list of all of the containers and boxes that you have placed inside. Next to each letter, write down the contents. Place this information on a clipboard and hang it up in a designated area inside of the storage bin. As long as you keep all of your belongings alphabetized, you will find that it is very easy to locate what you need.
Set Up A Station For Sorting
Lay a pallet down in one of the corners of the storage unit and use it as a sorting station. Bring in some empty boxes and label the outside of each one. Designate boxes for items that you would like to donate, throw away, and keep. Each time that you go to the storage unit, try to take the time to sort through a couple of the containers that you have. By taking small steps like this, you will not become overwhelmed and will soon see some progress. If you are unable to finish sorting through one of the containers, leave it on the pallet until you come back the next time.
Separate Belongings By Season And Owner
Place items inside of the unit so that they are separated by season. Keep items that will not be needed for several months in the back of the unit so that they are not in the way. Make sure that each of your family member’s has a designated area to keep their belongings. Include them when it comes time to sort through the storage unit. Having each person responsible for their own items will cut back on a a lot of the confusion and keep your unit neater. Little by little, you will be able to get your unit set up the way that you would like and will be able to make long term storage plans for the future.
